Awesome interview gentleman and yes I agree please have Mr. Easton on again! The interview gave me some insight to the TF: Deviations book. Before this interview I sadly would have given the book a 2 out of 5 rating but learning that a couple of pages needed to be cut explains the jumping around I felt the narrative gave us. After listening I hold true an earlier statement that this title would have been served better as a mini series instead of the one shot.
I’m not certain if most would agree, but I feel Prime’s injuries sustained durning the battle with Megaton would still have left him wounded and a little weak. That was somewhat answered with Hot Rod taking the lead with the Matrix to light their darkest hour. The book itself hit all the major story beats from the 86′ movie but I still feel something was left out or missing.
I tried my best not to read the book with the rose coloured glasses I have for the movie and seeing Starscream wear his crown longer than the minute he did was a HUGE bonus for me but what happened to the Matrix in the end? Was Prime able to retrieve it or did it blow up with Unicron? Also, who else died? It was the crashing of a Quintison vessel into Unicron that allowed the Autobots to save Jazz, Bumblebee and Spike that were mere moments away from being smelted? We see them in a final panel but how did they get off of Moonbase One?
Oh and to add to Darryl’s theory on Brandon not liking the mini bots with weird voices, is Wheelie still stuck on Quintison? Again great interview, it moves my rating on the book to about 2.5 out of 5 but I still feel this would have been better as a four part mini series.
I am with Ronin here on just about every point. Make this a mini series and I think it would have been great.
Just about every point? You must agree with me and lets build a wall to make the comments section great again! 😛
Great interview! Brandon was a great guest. I think you’ve found your guy for the G1 comic!
His take on the Magnus/Hot Rod relationship was interesting. My first response was “Wow, Magnus is a jerk!”
Interesting in that I think of Ultra Magnus and Rodimus in MTMTE as being a bit like Kiff and Zapp Brannigan from Futurama.
I think they found the right guys when they first started the petition!
Great Interview !!!
This guy is not your G1 comic guy. His approach to killing certain characters because he doesn’t like them, is something that comic would not benefit from.
Even after listening to this interview, my score for the Deviations comic is still a 2 and that’s a bump due to the art. I felt this was lazily written. Even giving this guy a few more pages would just give him 2 more pages to rip dialogue from and insert it into a different character from the movie.
You want a deviation from this story: With all the Hotrod belittlement (and there was lot), Hotrod should have been Unicron’s Herald not Starscream.
Fantastic interview! Brandon was a hoot to listen too. Haven’t read the issue yet, but two copies were preordered and are in my inbox! I had to request shipping the week before to get the #50 issues, have to wait for the inbox to fill up again…but I digress.
I think he would be a great choice for the G1 sunbow book. Think his comments on killing certain characters was said tongue in cheek.
But I think this series is going to happen. The field is getting cleared with TFvJ and Animated RID getting cancelled. I will fully support the book by getting both hardcover copies each month if it gets green lit. I was DecepticonsRule from the IDW boards that helped start the petition for the continuation of the 80’s comic along with Bassbot. So I’m rooting for this to happen!!
Lets hope you’re right Ron. We need a G1 book.
Did you see Brandon’s interview on newsarama? He’s expressed interest in doing a G1 book there also! Fingers crossed!!
While Brandon seems like a nice guy, Deviations was terrible. If you deviate from the movie then it doesn’t matter how many pages you have because you’re telling a new story. Instead the movie plot was retold with minor differences, you could have saved 2 pages by not going to Quintessa. And the parts that were repurposed made no sense in the context. Starscream asks Unicron for an upgrade, how would he know that was something he was capable of?
Ultra Magnus was unrecognizable in his portrayal here as was almost everyone else. In the interview Easton suggested that Magnus may be annoyed because he wants to be in charge. The guy that refused the Matrix initially…
I really want more Deviation books, I really want a G1 cartoon book, but the reaction to this book online is the worst I have seen since Hearts of Darkness and I fear that Easton may have sunk any chance even if it sells well. I hope that IDW can look past the reaction and give someone else a shot at writing a proper G1 book.
