On this episode of TransMissions Extra! it’s all about Star Wars! Since Disney bought Lucasfilm we’ve had a bit of a Renaissance of new Star Wars content that’s leading up to a new movie with Episode 7 coming this December. We talk about the animated show Star Wars Rebels, the new comics being produced by Marvel, and speculate a bit on the upcoming new movie The Force Awakens. Are you as big a Star Wars nerd as you are a Transformers geek? Let us know your thoughts on all the new Star Wars stuff!
What is TransMissions Extra!?
We usually spend the first 30 minutes of our TransMissions Skype call talking about other random topics before we record the main show. TransMissions Extra! is a more organized discussion of these topics recorded into a short podcast of its own. We hope you enjoy TransMissions Extra!

Sliiiiides into FIRST!!!
I know. I’m ridiculous.
Thanks, Charles, for giving us some background on Star Wars Rebels. I won’t necessarily watch the show regularly, but I’ll be more likely to watch it if I catch it mid-episode. It’s amazing how much content has been generated around characters that were just off-camera in the films.
May the Force be prosperous. _\V/
I guess we all knew this was coming: a Stars Wars episode of Transmissions Extra!
What can I say? I’ve been a massive Stars Wars fan for over 30 years, so it was pretty cool to hear what you guys think of it. I would, however, like to add a couple of things, if you don’t mind 😉
First of all, the “old” expanded universe is indeed no longer canon, but Marvel is actually accepting it as a kind of alternate universe and is releasing a lot of the collected editions of the Dark Horse comics digitally through Comixology, under a “Legends” banner. That way a lot of new fans can enjoy some of these classic comics too.
Also, I don’t know if you’ve already seen this, but in june they released a pilot episode for the second season of Rebels called: The Siege Of Lothal in which Ahsoka Tano returns and [SPOILER ALERT] finds out that Darth Vader is actually her former master Anakin. I guess that if you never watched the Clone Wars cartoon, then that might not be as big a deal as it was for me, but I can definitely recommend watching that show too if you like Rebels so much. I didn’t like the prequel movies that much either, but the Clone Wars show is much better. The 2D micro series is awesome and especially seasons 4, 5 and 6 of the 3D series are really great, leading straight up to episode III. And both the Obi Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker characters are done way better than in the prequel movies, as far as I’m concerned.
It also has some of the best lightsaber battles in it. This is one of my favorites: a “tag team” fight with Obi-Wan and Asajj Ventress against Darth Maul and Savage Opress (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlJiphrbLyg). I hope you like it!
Hey Ralph, I did see the Siege of Lothal this summer and it was great. I didn’t mention it on the show since Darryl seemed to be getting into the series and I didn’t want to spoil anything for him. 🙂
My son was into Clone Wars a little bit a couple years (he’s moved on to Minecraft) ago and I watched a few episodes with him. It was pretty good and I made a mental note to check it out, but I haven’t gotten back into it yet. I hope it’s still on Netflix!
If you enjoy Rebels Charles, you’ll like Clone Wars. I really love the episodes that focus on the clones, really gives some personality to them…. and yeah, watching that, then seeing the Ahsoka Rebels episode… too cool! They get real cool in the final couple seasons, real dark too.
Like Jeremy said, a lot of the Rebels stuff was McQuarrie concept stuff repurposed. Even Chopper was taken from the original shorter R2 that had arms in his head… a lot of the planets and ships were used too, heck, even Vader’s look has a McQuarrie samurai loom to it. Can’t wait for season 2.
I stopped reading the books years ago, but always loved the X-wing novels, I can’t wait for the Rogue One movie(stand alone movie that has to do with finding the Death Star plans pre-A New Hope).
Oooh, what about a section in the extras podcast for comic and toys that are not Transformers???
Ooooh… this is a slippery slope that may result in Transmissions spawning a second full-length podcast. 😛
