On this episode of TransMissions Extra!, Jeremy takes us through a quick review of all the current and upcoming superhero TV shows, and we give our thoughts on the best and the worst. We also ask whether it truly is a golden age for superhero TV, or are we heading towards the point of over-saturation?

Pretty cool that you guys talked about this. I try to follow all the Marvel and DC shows that you talked about. And I also loved Constantine, but that only lasted one season. Next to the shows you mentioned, there was also the on-line Powers series, based on the Brian Michael Bendis comic and iZombie based on the Vertigo comic. Season 2 of iZombie is also starting soon. And yes, I think people will eventually grow tired of it. Not comic book fans like us, because we’re used to that kind of stuff, but the general public will probably find a new “trend” and the ratings will probably go down after that. But hey, let’s just enjoy it while it lasts 🙂
I knew iZombie was based on a comic, but like Walking Dead it’s not what I could consider a “super hero” show. I never watched Constantine, but he’s going to be showing up in Arrow this season, so that show is retroactively part of the DCTU now.
I think we can consider the multitude of Netflix Marvel shows are just one series, which changes it’s title and star with each chapter. First we get Daredevil for a season, then someone else for the next. etc.
I have not finished listening to your show, but I was curious if you heard the theory that Gotham is set int he Arrow/Flash universe, but possibly 10 years EARLIER than the other series. You notice no one on Gotham uses a smart phone? They can do several seasons of Gotham, tie up the Gordon story, have Bruce grow up off camera, then come back as a crossover characters on Flash or Arrow who is the same age as the other heroes.
Also, one of the BEST TV series based on a comic right now is SyFy Channel’s Dark Matter, which is based on a Dark Horse comic series. It’s worth watching because they kept it intelligent, and didn’t keep the secrets too long. Every episode we learn something new about the main characters, and get new questions about them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M0fTZSSS5Y
No, iZombie is not really a superhero show, but it’s a totally different kind of show than the walking dead. Liv uses her “zombie skills” to fight crooks and help solve crimes, while trying to hide the fact that she is actually a zombie. So it comes pretty close to a superhero show 😉
Indeed, John Constantine will be appearing on Arrow and I’m looking forward to it.
Speaking of the Flash and how it ties in with the other series, I think it’s very interesting that in the very first episode the Reverse Flash travels back in time and attempt to kill the Flash as a boy, fails, but instead kills the Flash’s mother… the Flash’s father gets accused of killing her, then the Reverse Flash realizes he needs the Flash to exist so he can exist, so he sets into motion events to have a similar origin for the Flash that happened in the original universe. This basically means the ENTIRE series of The Flash takes place in an altered timeline, a parallel universe to one before the Reverse Flash messed it up. What was that original universe? We have seen several nods to the 1990’s Flash TV series in this one (including some characters played by the same actors!). I think the hint might be that the original unaltered Flash universe was the 1990s tv series. Now that time was screwed up royally in the final episode of season 1, and we know there are multiple realities, the old Flash TV series, Smallville, or any other old DC hero universe might be out there and able to be visited for an episode.
